  • Depression is a thing that hits us when we take hits. Its not that a depressed person is incapable of being/feeling happy, it is that things that most people would shrug off send a depressed person into a funk. It is not socially acceptable to dump this onto the general populace, and perhaps for good reason- sharing depression doesn’t always help, and the person listening can become depressed as well. Depression is the inability to feel good about the future. I seem to remember reading that somewhere. It’s funny that this is the medium that I choose to express myself in. It doesn’t really help, it just makes me feel somewhat productive, rather than watching TV. I can’t imagine what this is like without a hope of Heaven. Even feeling worthless, there is still a small glimmer. Even when doubting everything, there is still the possibility of relief. The truth of that is why Christ is so powerful. There are very few people on the planet who are ok. Those who have are depressed, seeking to fill the void. Those who have not still think that the void can be filled by whatever they seek- their children’s material well being/status etc. and so they have hope. But we don’t hope for what can be grasped, but what can only be given; what has been given. It is lunacy to think that we can achieve wholeness as humans on earth. The poor you will always have with you. Not to say that we should stop trying to fix the problem. It’s a sinking ship that’s sprouting more holes, but bailing and plugging is better than letting her go down. To preserve her long enough that everyone can get on a lifejacket. How’s this for tangential thinking? Kudos if you can follow the train of thought.

  • ok so me and some friends (two to be precise) have a running list of must-see movies. Trouble is, we keep forgetting what's on THE LIST (list...list......list.........). So i am going to write down all the movies that i can remember, and then add more as i remember them. So here goes. V for violence, S for nudity/sex (giving you an indication that you may want to steer clear until you get on in years). So without further ado, i give you THE LIST (list...list......list.........):

    New addition:
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind | One of those movies that lots of people think is good. I tend to agree with them. A romantic comedy/LSD trip. Would this movie be as good if it were named "Jim and Kate"? I guess we'll never know...S? Kirsten Dunst gets frisky in one of the side plots, so i wouldn't show it to the kiddies, but its not completely necessary for the movie, so you could fast-forward.

Braveheart | over rated, but just barely and there are still people who have not seen this movie! BTW, it gets a very big V and a pretty heavy S as well

Pulp Fiction | Quentin Tarantino at his best. Well, maybe at his most enjoyable. His other stuff is hard for me to watch. V cant remember any real strong sex stuff, but there is a drug side plot that is pretty graphic (Uma Thurmin snorts Heroin, with bad results)

Moulin Rouge | Beautiful in nearly every sense of the word. small s because hey, it is about prostitutes...

Amelie | Best watched with cough syrup... S

Signs | This movie is not about aliens. If you didnt get what it was about the first time, watch it until you do. Kinda intense, esp if watched alone with surround sound, but other than that, no letters.

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen | I kind of have a thing for surreal movies. If you liked the book "Haroun and the Sea of Stories" by Salman Rushdie, you will like this movie. if you don't recognize either of these, then you must experience both. medium size s and v

    Casablanca | a classic romance.

It's a Wonderful Life | I put this on here only for the people who have not grown up watching it EVERY Christmas.

Psycho | Only the original, not II and not the remake. V and s

Jerry Maguire | Tom Cruise would not be an actor without this movie. S

    Rain Man |
Okay, tom was ok in this one too, but this was really dustin hoffman's movie

Hook | ok now im just actor hopping...dustin hoffman and robin williams and julia roberts and that old lady who is really good but i can never remember her name...but get this Dustin Hoffman plays a tall man. also has bob hoskins...

    Fight Club |
this movie will be one that is taught in schools 100 years from now. Not because it's that good, but because i think it will be a culturally significant film. very big V and S. PS I am now looking at other ppl's facebooks to remember movies, just FYI...

Spanglish | absolutely did not expect this one to be good, but Adam Sandler (i know!) acts very well as do Paz Vega, Tea Leoni, Shelbie Bruce and Cloris Leachman (getting these off the website, would not have remembered otherwise). small s

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels | multi-sub-plot movie that comes together at the end. Good music, good filming, good movie. rather large V and S

    Snatch
    | same idea as the above, but with a new story new characters, etc. See lock stock first, but I like snatch better. V and S

    Serenity
    | best watched after seeing "Firefly" which is a TV series that is just that much better because it was cancelled in its first season. V

Spirited Away | Anime movie that suffers oh so much for being labeled so. Somewhat like Alice in Wonderland, but very fresh & interesting

Princess Mononoke | Same director, all the voice actors are well known Americans (Jada Pinkett Smith among them). Wierd, but good. V?

My Fair Lady | Old musical, but very good. ending is ???. you have been warned

The Princess Bride | cult movie, like Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Must see enough to quote.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail | guessed this was next did you? well aren't you clever...again, must see enough times to quote.

the following two i leave optional- they are not must see because many people will not enjoy them as much as i do, but i simply cannot have a list of must see movies without them:

Dumb and Dumber | quote this movie. It is a classic. Do not confuse with dumb and dumberer...small to medium s

    Zoolander
    | see above.

    back to must-see...

Batman Begins | really too young a movie to be must see, but i'm gonna put it up there anyway. small v

V for Vendetta | I didnt think i was going to put this up here, but i figure if Batman makes it, then "V" can make it too. the perfect movie to discern...

The Matrix (trilogy?) | unless of course you consider this movie. Probably the most analysed movie of our time, it is overrated, but still good. Reloaded and Revolutions are not must see for anybody except me. The merovingian and the architect make reloaded worth everything. and once you've seen relaoded, you may as well finish out the series. V for the first one, add S for the second and the third.

The Lord of the Rings (trilogy) | if i need to explain this, then you just need to see them. oh yeah- dont try to watch them while sleep deprived.

The Boondock Saints | One of the better shoot em ups. Big V and also an S.

The Usual Suspects | There is no question- this is a must see, but I can't tell you why. BTW don't ask anyone about the movie, just see it. V and S? I dont remember if ther eis an S....

Lemony Snickett's "A Series of Unfortunate Events" | Proof that PG means more than "pretty good", this movie is *gasp* about as good as the books, if not better. Jim Carrey is perfect for the role, and the kids all do great acting as well. The movie has an excellent feel to it, given the costume and set design and slightly absurd tone (that is also present in the books).

  • Next story- i got sick with the flu and missed two days of work. I stayed at home and watched movies and tried not to think of how crappy i felt. One of the nights, i was delirious and kept thinking the sheets were somehow knotted or a puzzle the i somehow had to undo with my feet. I woke up several times really frustrated that i couldn't get them to untangle, and smooth them out. I have since solved the riddle of the sheets. You see at home, I have these el cheapo sheets that are made out of t-shirt material. They are very stretchy, and so my legs have become accustomed to kicking the sheets while i sleep to reset them. Thus, while i was kicking the sheets that night, my legs kept expecting the resistence of my regular sheets, with only cold hard sheets for their efforts. And in my delirious state, this whole thing became pandemonium, and of course i didn't realize what was going on, just that something was annoying me. I realized why i was so frustrated that night tonight. I have decided that i am homesick. I came home tonight, and it was tostadas. Which is fine normally, even in light of the fact that we had burritos last night (my Dad was the only other adult in the house you see), but tonight I really wanted something more substantial. I like being a bachelor, and i dont mind eating a bachelor's meal of burritos, but i am a bachelor all year long at Calvin, and tonight i just wanted to be home. I wanted a Mom and a Dad and brothers and sisters and a grandmother and a grandfather and a dog. I wanted to be at cheers. I wanted to be in my dorm room with Jim, watching cartoons and making ramen.
So now i'm going to go to bed, and try and sleep like i'm back at Calvin.
  • Ok so it has been entirely too long since my last post. This is all i have to get accomplished tonight. i'm trying to remember where i left off- what do i need to tell? ok so first off- a couple weeks back, i went to church with my sister Kat and a friend of mine from last summer who is also named Kat. Kat and I picked up Kat at her place and then drove to Ecclesia, where we saw picnic umbrella's with "Katz" on the top. After church we were all hungry, seeing as how this particular service was at 5:30 in the evening. So we go to Katz's Deli (which is sort of misleading- it is a pricey sit down deli. I had about four inches of meat in my rueben), and our waiter Lane was subjected to an endless flow of meaningless questions. Katz's, it turns out, has Jewish ties, and has several meals that are "Kosher style", but not actually Kosher. We asked this because it said something like "Hebrew style" Anyway, through all our questions, we found out that lane was born deaf, and had gained his hearing at the age of four. thus, Lane does not have a Southern drawl. In fact, he speaks very much like someone from Europe. He also looks like he could be Danish or something, so i was confused. Anyway, the night wound up being quite fun, and ended with us writing Lane a beat poem, performed by me (it was written much like a mad lib, but actually sounded quite serious).
